Introduction to DISC profiling

Recently I got the opportunity to pass a certification to become a DISC expert. Even though this was in the context of work, I've found that it has some huge benefits for all aspects of life. So, I've decided to share with you the secrets of DISC.
What is DISC?
The DISC is an assessment tool that helps you better understand your personality type and behavioral style. In other words, it is a test with multiple questions through which you will be able to determine the way you naturally act in life and in which category you belong to.
There are 4 main categories:
- D for Dominance
- I for Influence
- S for Steadiness
- C for Conscientious
According to the psychologist William Moulton Marston, creator of the DISC, we can label any human in one of those 4 categories. The world population is equally dispatched over these 4 categories. It is usually represented by a circle or square divided in 4 equal parts.
What are the 4 categories?
In order to establish these 4 categories, there is a simple 2 step process:
1 - Establish if you are more "fast paced & action oriented" or more "reserved & reflective".
If you are the first case,then you'll be placed on the top side of the circle and if you are of the second type, then you'll be on the bottom side of it.
2 - Are you more "skeptical & task-oriented" or "accepting & people oriented"?
In the first case, you'll be on the left hand side of the circle and in the second, on the right hand side.
So, based on this, do you think you can define your own profile?
Now, each category can be defined by a few adjectives that express the main characteristics & values of individuals of the mentioned category:
- Dominance: results oriented / direct / competitive / firm
- Influence: enthusiasm / friendly / optimistic / outgoing
- Steadiness: sincerity / patient /modest / humble
- Conscientious: accurate / cautious / private / systematic

The truth is, every single one of us is a blend of all 4 profiles and they manifest differently based on the situation: work, home, stranger, friend...but we have a natural instinct that can be identified by these profiles.

What is the use of it?
First of all, this helps you to understand a bit more about yourself and the way you process things. Second, it makes you realize that people around you do not process the same way as you. This might explain a few things that you have experienced hundred times: why will you connect with some people more easily than others? Well probably because you focus on the same values.
Knowing our DISC profile and being able to identify someone else's allows us to understand how to connect better with them. This is extremely useful if you're a sales person for example, but also to improve efficiency & team cohesion in the workplace or to have a better understanding of your partner at home.
Imagine that you have 4 people in a room. They are all wearing a pair of tinted sunglasses with different colors for each individual. Then you ask all of them to look at the same object. We agree here that they will all see the same object, but due to the tinted sunglasses; each individual will see the object slightly differently based on the color. That's how we all see life: through our own pair of sunglasses. So in order to understand others, we can put someone else's glasses on and see the world through their vision.
What are the expected results?
You can definitely expect great results out of it. From applying it at home, to the workplace and training sales teams across the country, it pays off all the time. Communication is improving, tension is defusing, goals are met a lot quicker and a sense of harmony takes place.
It does take a bit of training to get used to it and to have the skills to recognize DISC profiles at a glance, but once you've passed the first few days/weeks of using it consistently, it becomes easier.
